May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Unfortunately there is a great stigma surrounding mental health issues in our society. I feel this is in large part due to social media. We are expected to show the “Instagram version” of our lives. But let’s face it. Not all days are like our Instagram feed shows.
We talk about other diseases but we do not talk about mental illness. It is still considered taboo. I hope to help break down the stigma around it and let other people suffering know that they aren’t alone and it’s okay to talk about.
I also hope to share some of my experiences and how I have used hiking and nature as one of my ways to deal with my anxiety and depression. Please note, I say ONE of my strategies. Anyone who suffers from any sort of mental illness knows that you must have multiple coping mechanisms in place.
By sharing, I hope that I others may feel comfortable sharing their experiences and we may be able to start breaking down the walls that surround mental health issues.
